Important notes on vocabulary: Finnish has a specific word for ringed seal (norppa) in addition to a broader term that covers all seals (hylje). Norppa is just such a fun word that my partner and I have adopted it into English as “norp,” because it’s more fun to say than “ringed seal.”
Finnish also has a specific term for baby seals: instead of being called seal pups (which is cute in its own way), or pentu, the term for a baby seal in Finnish is kuutti. This we have also adopted into English as “cute” via the process of phono-semantic matching. Because seal pups are cutes.
“Norp” is practically an onomatopoeia for a seal’s bark.
